MOMENTUM FOR MENTAL HEALTH RAISES $89K BENEFITING THOSE LIVING WITH MENTAL ILLNESS AND RECOGNIZES THE IMPACT OF STIGMA <
San Jose, California – June 12, 2009 – On June 1, 2009, La Rinconada Country Club in Los Gatos, California saw 100 golfers as they took a swing to support Momentum and the mental health community at the 6th Annual Benefit Golf Tournament. Approximately $89,000 was raised to help fund much needed mental health services and programs for those living with mental illness.
After a riveting day of golf and beautiful weather over 125 participants and their guests enjoyed a sit down dinner, followed by a raffle, awards, and live and silent auction. Momentum board members and event co-chairs Larry Burns and Dick Foley and Momentum CEO Paul Taylor, welcomed everybody and delivered the introductions. “In spite of the poor economy, we had nearly 100 players and thanks to all of them plus our loyal and generous sponsors we were able to make a net profit of about $89,000 to fund many enhanced services to the under-served and extra care to meet the needs of our clients. We are very grateful to everyone who made this benefit tournament a success,” says Larry Burns. This year’s event featured a ladies division which brought to the tournament a new and much welcomed dynamic. Mitch Juricich, president of Hooked on Golf, served as Master of Ceremonies and auctioneer to a high spirited and entertaining crowd as the 49ner Gold Rush Cheerleaders were on hand to congratulated the winners of the Men’s 1st and 2nd place Scrabble, Ladies’ 1st and 2nd place Scrabble, 1st Place Better Ball, and Putting Contest.

Stigma, often associated with mental illness, has long been a deterrent for many seeking proper treatment. With every 1 in 4 people affected in one way or another by mental illness, golfers and their friends and families came together at the 2009 Annual Golf Tournament dinner to lend their support for Momentum and all of their many clients. “Our Annual Golf Tournament not only raises funds for much needed Momentum mental health services and programs, but lends a voice to those who are directly or indirectly impacted by stigma and mental illness,” says Paul Taylor, Momentum’s CEO.
