2010 SHINING STARS BENEFIT LUNCHEON - MAY 7
The Shining Stars Luncheon is an annual celebration of the spirit of hope rising above and beyond the stigma of mental illness. The luncheon also honors individuals and organizations for their outstanding contribution to raising awareness and reducing the stigma that surrounds mental illness.
The 2010 Shining Stars Luncheon is slated for May 7 at the Santa Clara Marriot Hotel from 11:30a.m-1:30p.m.
Keynote Speaker
Lizzie Simon is the author of DETOUR: My Bipolar Roadtrip in 4-D, published in 2002. A frequent guest lecturer on mental health at over sixty universities and mental health organizations across United States, she has appeared on CNN, Fox, ABC News, NPR, and CBS radio. She has also been featured in several national and local media outlets.
Her career as a mental health advocate was catalyzed by her personal experience with bipolar disorder as a teenager – at a time when there was little information about the illness.
In 2003, she was recognized – nationally – as a leading advocate for people with mental illness with an Eli Lilly Helping Lives Move Forward Reintegration Award, alongside Congressman Patrick Kennedy and Rosalyn Carter.
Simon grew up in Providence, Rhode Island. She graduated from Columbia with a BA in history in 1998.
